Mike and Jan Berenstain enlighten and inspire the holiday spirit in children with a fun, Lift-the-Flap Book from the Berenstain Bears Living Lights series that teaches readers the story of Christmas

“She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” – Luke 2:7

The mother and son writing team of Jan and Mike Berenstain has been teaching and inspiring children for decades. In their latest story, the iconic Berenstain Bears arrive just in time for the holidays with THE BERENSTAIN BEARS GET READY FOR CHRISTMAS (Zonderkidz; $6.99; October 2011). In this new book, the family finds fun and adventure as the bears attempt to assemble the family Nativity scene.

The story of the Nativity shines through as Brother, Sister, and Honey Bear search the Bear family tree house to find their manger scene, a family “bearloom,” in this memorable and fun lift-the-flap Christmas story.

Beginning their traditional Christmas decorating, the Bears pop open the box that should hold the entire Nativity scene, but find only the baby Jesus in his manger. Where are the rest of the figurines?

The cubs begin a holiday hunt through their home and discover missing pieces of the Nativity scene in the most unlikely places. Camels are tucked away in a cabinet. Three wise bears are hidden behind a clock on the mantle. And the Christmas star dangles behind the family Bible. Young readers will enjoy finding these wonderful surprises along with the beloved Berenstain Bears.

A few months ago, I was introduced to my first Lift-the-flap Berenstain Bears book and enjoyed it. We love the Berenstain Bears in general, but being a lift the flap book makes it so much more interactive for my toddler. Honestly, I believe that AppleBlossom and I liked this one even better than the last. Recently her favorite thing to do with all picture Bibles is to “find baby Jeez” so to have a whole book dedicated to finding baby Jesus and that which goes with his birth scene is awesome reading for us right now. Just personally I have to say that I love seeing how there are bits and pieces of the nativity all over the Bear’s house… it is like Jesus and faith, once he is in, he is all around and all over.

Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Since the late 80’s, he has been very much involved as a writer and illustrator with his family’s creation, the Berenstain Bears. He continues to work with his mother, Jan, creating new books, writing and illustrating. The antics and activities of Mike’s three children have provided inspiration for many Berenstain Bears books over the years. Though Stan died in 2005, Jan and Mike continue to create the delightful Bear adventures from their family home in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country. www.berenstainbears.com
