Grapevine Studies: New Testament Overview Part 1 {Review}

Creative Madness Mama subscribers know that I adore Grapevine Studies  ~  (http://grapevinestudies.com/ as they are one of my promoted affiliates. Today is a special day because right now I am here to tell you about one of their delightful downloadable products, two actually! In this post I will be discussing New Testament 1: Beginner John to the Apostles (ages 5-7) and Traceable (ages 3-5) and a Teacher Book for NT Beginner. as well as New Testament 1: Level 1 Birth of John to Jesus’ Ministry (ages 6-8) and Traceable (ages 3-5) and a Teacher Book for NT Levels 1 & 2. Over the last few years, I have been collecting their eShorts and freebies and making a list of what to buy to go along with our other studies. Grapevine-Studies-TOSReviewCrew-This year (and for my previous review – link back) we have been working through Old Testament 1: Level 1 (ages 6-8) and Traceable (ages 3-5) and a Teacher Book for OT Levels 1 & 2. We received a digital download, a PDF.

For the purposes of this review, I have spent the last few weeks putting the Old Testament Overview on hold and started working our way through the New Testament Overview. We received a digital download, a PDF, and I printed a the pages for my four and six-year-old daughters to participate. I printed the traceable pages for only the Princess, as AppleBlossom is confidently using the standard Beginner/Level 1 work pages now. I just give the Rascal a scrap page and a crayon to scribble…

The Teacher's Guide is absolutely required in my opinion to complete the lessons. It contains lesson notes, overall timelines, and each stick figure drawings (in full-color), as well as lesson goals and the key points to be met. There are also memory verses as well as review questions and answers.

Next year, for AppleBlossom’s third-grade year our curriculum choices for our primary history curricula will be featuring New Testament, Greece, and Rome and after adding in the Old Testament Overview to our studies this year… I know that adding the Grapevine Studies New Testament Overview next year will be a great choice. As I mentioned, for the purposes of this review we have jumped right in to spend a few weeks exploring the beginning of the New Testament Overview and my students have participated eagerly! As always, our time in these lessons grants me many positive opinions of Grapevine Studies. We use our study at home, but I still agree that this would be awesome for a group of children in a Sunday School class, private Christian schools, cottage schools, after-school and on and on for just about anybody.

For our purposes and to save on printing costs in our family we do not print the Teacher’s Guide PDF but I access it either on my laptop or on my iPad through my private cloud drive. All other supplies we use include dry erase markers, dry erase board, and my Bible. Some days we share my Bible, while on other days I have AppleBlossom keep her own Bible handy and reference the appropriate scripture within. In my experiences, I would much rather have printed the Teacher’s Guide, but we make it work. I do like that I have the option.

I am a big fan of the formatting of the Teacher’s Guide and I appreciate the obvious prayer and time that went into presenting this program to share with families such as mine as well as the color changes that make the guidelines stand out from the other text.

Starting with the birth of Jesus Christ, your preschool and kinder students will begin on a rememberable adventure with stick figures to
travel the New Testament scripture as they draw major events from John the Baptist's birth through Jesus' ministry on Earth.

The Beginner level from Grapevine Studies is new to me this year, as previously I have only worked with Level 1 in both the standard student book and traceables. The Beginner level is aimed at preschool and kindergarten students from the 5-7 age range. Specifically, in this program, it starts with Jesus as a baby, through John’s ministry and the start of Jesus’ ministry on Earth.

The full set of Beginner lessons for each girl is short enough that I was able to use my industrial stapler to staple through it. (If you don’t have one, you can always borrow the use at a package and delivery store.)

The Beginner Traceable book is made up of the same pages as the standard Beginner Student Book, however, each page has grey lines showing where and what to draw. This book is completely in grey-scale black and white.

While the Beginner Level is written toward ages 5-7, the tracebables make it where even your 3-5 can participate with a gray-scale tracing line already presented just awaiting their coloring in. I can also see the potential for using a lower level or traceable edition for a special needs student and that student would still be getting all the benefits of learning the story through their own art. The actual book cover does not list the age, just the level.

New Testament Overview Beginner

Using the Grapevine teaching method, beginner students are given the tools to study the main characters and happenings of the Bible to help them make a basic mental timeline with stick figure drawings to peg the events upon. The New Testament Part 1 Beginner includes the following events:

  1. the birth of John the Baptist
  2. the Announcement of the birth of Jesus Christ to Mary and Joseph
  3. the nativity and birth of Jesus Christ
  4. the Angels and the Shepherds in reference to Jesus’ birth
  5. the Wise Men as well as Herod
  6. Jesus at the temple as a child
  7. John prepared the people for Jesus
  8. John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River
  9. Jesus’ temptation by Satan
  10. the 12 Disciples / Apostles

New Testament Part 2 Beginner picks up with Jesus’ Ministry Years!

At first, we were confused…

When I first made my request and got our assignment for this review I was confused. My thought was that I would have the Princess working on the New Testament Overview Part 1 Beginner John to the Apostles tracing pages and have AppleBlossom working on the New Testament Overview Part 1 Level 1 Birth of John to Jesus’ Ministry. What I did not realize is these are not exactly compatible! Well, they are, but slightly different. It actually worked out better to either have the Princess use the Level 1 Traceables for Birth of John to Jesus’ Ministry while AppleBlossom used the Level 1 standard Student pages for Birth of John to Jesus’ Ministry, OR to have both girls working on the Beginner set. As in the Princess completing the Traceables Beginner John to the Apostles and AppleBlossom using the standard Student pages Beginner John to the Apostles.

In the end, for now, we have spent the most time working in the Beginner New Testament Overview set but found we could have gone either way.

Learning the timeline of the New Testament scriptures has never been more fun that this hands-on approach of stick figures! Your students will learn, in order, the events from the birth of John the Baptism through the basic ministry of Jesus.

The teacher's books has it all including, lesson notes, timelines, drawings, lesson goals & key points, memory verses, and review questions & answers in 100 pages.

As I’ve said in the past, I still echo that my favorite bit about this curriculum is that students are encouraged to actually read the scripture and not just rely upon a paraphrase without cracking the spine of their Bible. I want my kiddos to know that the Bible is a reverenced text, but not to avoid it. I want them to use it. Using these Bible Studies, I truly believe that I am creating a foundation for my kids to build upon and have a desire to learn more about what all is found in this great big storybook – because we all just love our storybook treasuries.

New Testament Level 1

The New Testament Part 1 Level 1 includes the following events in greater detail than the Beginner level on the timeline scroll format:

  1. the birth of John the Baptist
  2. the Announcement of the birth of Jesus Christ to Mary and Joseph
    • the nativity and birth of Jesus Christ
    • the Angels and the Shepherds in reference to Jesus’ birth
  3. Jesus in Egypt
    • the Wise Men as well as Herod
  4. Jesus at the temple as a child
  5. John prepared the people for Jesus
    • John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River
  6. Jesus’ temptation by Satan
  7. Specifics about identifying and defending against Satan
  8. the 12 Disciples / Apostles
  9. the teaching of Jesus
  10. Observation of when/where Jesus prays

New Testament Part 2 Level 1 2&  picks up with Jesus’ Ministry to His Trials!

Using the student book, your children will learn in order the events from the birth of John the Baptist to the beginning of the ministry of Jesus. From the expected coming of Jesus, baptism, temptation and the disciples. Learning about Jesus in history, how he began His ministry and interacted with the civilization of the first century.

The Level 1 Student Book is directed toward an age range of 6-8, although AppleBlossom did well in this one when she was only five, she is an advanced learner. In addition to the student book, all you need are colored pencils and a Bible. We use our special colored pencils for this lesson and it makes the time spent even more special for my artistic student.

The Level 1 program also encourages the use of looking specifically vocabulary up in a Bible dictionary. We had fun getting out different dictionaries, and resources to find the right terminologies.

Grapevine Studies New Testament Overview

Differences and similarities with Beginner and Level 1 New Testament Overview

While there is a bit of overlap in concepts and themes from the Beginner to the Level 1 curriculum, Level 1 has the timeline to add the concepts to and more depth. 12 Weekly Lessons or 45 Daily Lessons

The Level 1 Traceable book is made up of the same pages as the standard Level 1 Student Book, however, each page has grey lines showing where and what to draw. This book is completely in grey-scale black and white.

While Level 1 is geared toward ages 6-8, the traceables are adapted ages 3-5 or the 6-8s that need a little artistic help with a gray-scale tracing line with the illustrations already presented for them to color in. If your preschooler uses the Level 1 Traceble, your third grader uses the Level 1 Student Book, and so on.

Olders can move up to level 2 with less drawing space even if needed!

What an incredible foundation!

Grapevine Studies Review
So far, I’ve collected eLessons of The Announcement (of Mary’s conception), 10 Commandments, 12 Apostles, The Gospels, Joseph – the early years, Sharing the Gospel, and have gotten lessons for us to learn Ruth in Moab, and A Bible Study – Life of RuthI plan to continue on with the New Testament Overview next year to enrich our curricula studies we have planned. I mention that I use this program in addition to and to enrich what we’re doing, but it could stand alone as well. http://grapevinestudies.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/BFHD-Square-250x250.jpgThe details and passion for studying scripture is all there. I’m tempted to get the Moses and the Exodus thematic lessons for this year as we will start Moses soon… I’ll have to see how much overlap there is between the OT Overview and the Moses lessons. The last two and newest items that are truly on my wishlist are Biblical Feasts and Holy Days and the Biblical Calendar!

The translation of Bible scripture we use does not affect the lessons and thus you can use your favorite translation. I also believe that you can come at these Biblical-based lessons from any denominational background. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to my Catholic or Protestant friends.
