Tessa Afshar

Tessa, I’m delighted you’re here to share about your new book, Land of Silence. Tell us a bit about yourself and what you have written.

I was born in the Middle East and spent the first thirteen years of my life there. When I read the Bible, it comes to life through the web of my memories. Growing up in the land that the Bible calls Persia influences the way I read the Scriptures. I know the quality of the sun, the dryness of the air, the love for the rains when they come, the deep sense of hospitality, the profound affection for children and family, the commitment to friendship by the people of the Middle East. I have been touched by that world in a very personal way. I suppose it is inevitable that I write biblical fiction.

My first four novels, including Harvest of Gold, which won the Christy Award, are based on Old Testament characters. What amazes me is the way readers connect with these biblical men and women who lived thousands of years ago. For example Pearl in the Sand tells the story of Rahab, a woman with a shockingly checkered past. I was amazed that readers felt a deep connection with this unlikely heroine of our faith. So many women can relate to the wound of rejection and loss of self worth that drove Rahab in Pearl in the Sand. To my astonishment, that book won “New Author of the Year” by the Family Fiction sponsored Readers Choice Awards in 2011. In some ways, this is the most meaningful award I have won so far, because the readers chose the book.

My latest novel, Land of Silence shifts gears to the New Testament and is based on the story of the woman who bled for twelve years. She found no remedy until she met Jesus, and stole her healing from Him by touching the hem of His garment without asking His permission.

Why did you write Land of Silence?

The story of the woman with the issue of blood has always fascinated me because she is the only person in the New Testament that Jesus calls daughter. I wanted to create a storyline that captured Jesus’s reason for addressing her in such a tender manner.

We are all daughters and sons. Our souls identify in a key way to that reality. What our fathers and mothers thought of us lingers in the deepest parts of our souls and gives us our sense of worth. They also produce our deepest wounds, wounds that continue to affect the course of our lives. By claiming us as His sons and daughters, God takes this reality to a deeper level, healing the wounds we may have sustained from our fathers and mothers and multiplying the blessings we have received from them. He transforms our brokenness into His wholeness.

In Land of Silence, I portray a strong woman who is broken in body and soul. She finds healing for her body at the feet of Jesus. But she also finds healing for her heart. And that, for me, is even more exciting.

We have included the complete first chapter for your readers here. I don’t know about you, but reading out of order messes with my head! I like to start from page one. So we thought we would let you start there also.

Do you have a book trailer?

Instead of a book trailer, we decided to do an author interview for this book. I think it allows the fans to go deeper and learn more about the book. Tyndale did an excellent job incorporating music and special touches to make this video very special. To watch it, go to http://tessaafshar.com, and click on Tessa Afshar Talks About Her New Novel.

It has been a pleasure to spend this time with you and your readers, Margaret. Thanks for asking me over to be your guest.

Before Christ called her daughter . . .

Before she stole healing by touching the hem of his garment . .

Elianna is a young girl crushed by guilt. After her only brother is killed while in her care, Elianna tries to earn forgiveness by working for her father’s textile trade and caring for her family. When another tragedy places Elianna in sole charge of the business, her talent for design brings enormous success, but never the absolution she longs for. As her world unravels, she breaks off her betrothal to the only man she will ever love. Then illness strikes, isolating Elianna from everyone, stripping everything she has left.

No physician can cure her. No end is in sight. Until she hears whispers of a man whose mere touch can heal. After so many years of suffering and disappointment, is it possible that one man could redeem the wounds of body . . . and soul?
