CTC Math Online Maths Tutor {Review, 3rd year}

CTCMath Review
In 2014 we were introduced to CTCMath and discovered the benefit to an online school program and the joy that can be found with such an addition to our homeschool day.
CTCMath has been renewed in our homeschool going on our third year, and we are reviewing this one-year subscription to CTCMath Homeschool Membership thanks to our participation with the TOS Homeschool Review Crew. What a blessing this is!

CTCMath is an online math program. We successfully use it on my iMac desktop, Linux-based Ubuntu laptop running a moderated Chrome browser, iPad1, iPad2 both in the Safari browser with little to no issue. We’ve enjoyed it in years past, and this year my turning-five-years-old-next-week daughter is really getting the benefit of the program as well! We use the program daily during the weekday and sometimes on weekends as well. The girls are both eager to work with CTCMath and consider it a reward spending time using the program.

I have always enjoyed CTCMath, but I am delighted with some of the changes they have made in the past year since we renewed as well as things that I have discovered after more use with the program. The one-year subscription is good for 12-months from subscription date, and if you have a little lapse in between your renewal, your information is still saved and ready to go when your account is back up and running.

CTC Math Review

You may have seen my previous reviews of CTCMath for their US Curriculum and my previous opinions still hold, and my feelings for CTCMath continue to stay extremely positive and are only becoming fonder. Just this morning I was chatting with another homeschooling mama that uses a lot of the same curriculum as  we do. She also adds in CTCMath for her daughter and they are very happy with it in their own homeschool daily life. A few years ago, I would have told you repeatedly that I was pretty anti-computer-school. However, the joys and helps of programs like CTCMath have really changed my opinion and I’m delighted to watch my daughter, and now two daughters truly grow and excel with this program!

Right now, my seven-year-old entering-third-grade daughter is brushing up on her addition and subtraction facts as well as working to master the new skills of multiplication. We enjoy our book-learning math curriculum, however, review and practice are necessary and with CTCMath the reinforcement in a different way on completing a math equation is paramount for the success of our mathematical applications in our Creative Madness Mama Blossom School.  Many days I do not know what I would do without the guidance of CTCMath for my easily frustrated daughter!

Still a favorite and new loves to enjoy…

The status report emails continue to be my favorite part of the parents’ login side of the website. I enjoy knowing exactly what the girls have been up to beyond just their informing me. But this year something that I discovered that is AMAZING is the ability to assign tasks with due dates! Even after the task due date is past, the task will still appear and my child is able to do it when she is available. I can easily access this and edit it to my heart’s desire all within my parent dashboard when I am logged in and it is a complete joy for me!

On the levels of learning we are currently using for our students we do not need to print any pages or materials outside of certificates of achievement when they are awarded (but we can come back and print these at any time). This is truly a great supplement for extra practice for my older daughter and a great introductory (PATIENT) tutor for my short attention span younger daughter. Both girls continue to love it and request it as their math choice often!

We also love the independent customizing. Each girl has chosen their own color scheme and at a glance, I can tell if there are on the right account. Ooh! and another thing that is wonderful this year is the ability to chose to expand the window when working on questions. In our house, most of our technology is family hand-me-downs from an uncle or the grandparents. Thus, our first generation iPad and even now the iPad2 are a bit temperamental. Previously, we would be in the question area of any lesson and it would bounce back up from being scrolled down and thus we were not able to click submit. Now, with this new option to full screen the questions, there is nothing to scroll and thus we are always able to use it even on our finicky devices!

I love!

  • The parent dashboard! The ability to see my student’s activity, easily access awards and weekly reports is so important to me. Especially, when I’m not sitting down with them through each lesson. The Latest tasks, recently expired and upcoming tasks menu is so wonderful!
  • The fact that I can put in the Enginerd’s email and only send him the awards and certifications for information to be proud of is a true blessing. Many times programs have an all or nothing email blast and this selectiveness is really desireable for me.
  • The ability to change a pass grade, and the color changing as the skills are achieved on the status bar is so great. It really helps my visual learners to see where they are and strive to get that bar all the way across and into the blue!
  • I love that it is not one grade or nothing. I love how my third grader can work at third grade level, but then go back to second or even to kindergarten for extra practice and to truly get a mastery of such a variety of mathematical skills.

While we have not in our homeschool made use of the Speed Skills, the Times Tables, and Swap Pieces in the program, I am glad that they are there and definitely plan to incorporate them into our school year this year. Overall, I am finding a continuous benefit to CTCMath and truly think that it is worth the time and a benefit to our family’s learning.

The program is very flexible and simple to get in and use. I have a parent login and each of my students has their own login as well. They each have access to all grades of math from Kindergarten through upper levels equivalent for high school learning so they can really go at their own slow or speedy pace.

It is obvious that CTCMath is truly listening to feedback and making their program better and better each year. I haven’t a single complaint this year and I’m delighted that we are giving it ago one more time!
