Wulf the Saxon (Heirloom Audio Productions) {Review}
Wulf the Saxon. Historical fiction is one of my passions, however, I have never been overly familiar with the 11th-century invasion of England. I know it happened, but being able to imagine the details and research it is something that I have yet to do. For the purposes of this review, I was blessed with a physical CD MP3 set including this audio theater adventure from the latest in The Extraordinary Adventures of G.A. Henty. Wulf the Saxon is a classic Henty tale of nobility, loyalty and courage set in 11th-century Britain. It relates the adventures of Wulf, a young, but extremely capable Saxon thane.

In a typical Henty fashion, the story is told from the perspective of two young adventurous boys in for a whirl of a story! This dramatization comes in a durable two-CD set providing two hours of educational entertainment for ages six and up to capture the imagination. “Building character in the next generation by bringing the lessons of history to life.” – Live the Adventure. Even the CD case artwork screams to allude to the adventure to come. The story jumps right in with sixteen year old Wulf getting into a spot of trouble and bother, and it keeps going for a thrilling ride of adventure after that. To me, it seems this was the most action packed of The Extraordinary Adventures of G.A. Henty that we have experienced so far.
Audio dramatization written by Darby Kern and a soundtrack written by Emmy-winning composer John Campbell (of Narnia) filled with actor voices of noted talent makes the pages of history vibrant and interesting. My daughter loves to recreate her favorite scene that shows how “Wulf is super brave” as he had to crawl out a window in a high castle tower in the middle of the night with a rope to get away from the mean and evil people. My son loves pretending he is on the rough rough seas, and you better believe he will get knocked unconscious by a railing just as Wulf did with the impending threat of a shipwreck. And then of course, my princess loving and logical child wants to know why wartime and peace talks should impose on the concept of a marriage at all, because it is all about love every time right?Â
Wulf the Saxon by G.A. HentyFortunate are the few who marry for love.

Annon Domini 1065 is hard time for many people of today's world to imagine. Edward the Confessor is King of England. Wulf, a fairy young Saxon landholder, quickly earns respect from those he serves, through his devotion to duty, courage, and honor. But when Wulf and his stout Christian friend, Harold, find themselves shipwrecked on the shores of Normandy, a deep and desperate struggle for the English throne starts for them all. The Battle of Hastings lays the ground for the very course of history to be decided. Brothers become enemies. A boy transitions to manhood. A nation is founded.
When I have read about this era in the past, it has been from a talented author that describes the characters in history quite well and I’d recommend them to adult readers. But there are some unnecessary graphic bits that make those books impossible to hold on to for suggesting my learners read them. So how to teach and experience the 11th-century in so rough a bit to young learners? This is exactly where the talent and Christian foundation retelling of historical points in time comes through with a resounding YES in Wulf the Saxon and other things we have discovered through the Live the Adventure Club in the past several months! This Saxon thane, Wulf of Steyning, local to King Harold Godwinson is brave and his story captivates the risks of rescue, capture, battle, and standing by your sworn Lord. We love the adventure in the way that it is portrayed from the talent at Heirloom Audio Productions and now my daughter (age 8.5) is even excited to go read another Henty story. Next, we may even try to check out The Dragon and the Raven, one from our wishlist, as we may step back to go further in our understanding of a Viking onslaught and another Saxon thane and warrior.
