IEW TWSS

We are still in the beginning of our homeschool journey, yet for years, I have heard about the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) and their main program Teaching Writing, Structure and Style (TWSS). My SisterL sings their praises and uses the program with her children as well. If you’ve been around my blog at all you know that we are fans of the Memoria Press Classical Core Curriculum and more recently MP has recommended IEW Bible Heroes Writing Lessons in Structure and Style during the Second Grade year and has even added in IEW Fun and Fascinating Writing Lessons in Structure and Style to the MP Third Grade Curriculum package.   *If you are reading this in a feed, you may wish to click through to the blog to be able to see the full details on the books. Well-Ordered Language Student Edition

*After reading my review, you might want to check out the free homeschool guide for adapting the current version of WOL. You might recognize my words. 😉 Have you pondered over the Course Plan of Study in the front of the Classical Academic Press catalog and wondered what you should do for your grammar study? Sure, you could do that repetitive scripted wonderfully hand-holding one, or you could immerse yourself in the jingle heavy one that is confusing to get started. Why couldn’t CAP just have their own program to fill the grammar gap? Oh, wait they will! WOL or rather the Well-Ordered Language is the Curious Child’s Guide to Grammar and it will be available God-permitting in the mid-spring! America’s First Daughter {Excerpt}

America's First Daughter

. “Painstakingly researched, beautifully hewn, compulsively readable — this enlightening literary journey takes us from Monticello to revolutionary Paris to the Jefferson White House, revealing remarkable historical details, dark family secrets, and bringing to life the colorful cast of characters who conceived of our new nation. A must read.” (Allison Pataki, New York Times bestselling author of The Accidental Empress)   AMERICA’S FIRST DAUGHTER EXCERPT Mr. Short’s Declaration “Patsy, will you allow me to walk you home?” Mr. Short asked. In that moment, I’d have gone anywhere with him. It didn’t matter that my feet ached from dancing or that I’d left my shawl upstairs, or even that my chaperone would soon notice I was missing. That spring in Paris, defiance of rules was the norm. And a wild defiant liberation had taken hold of me, so I didn’t fight it. I simply went with him out into the night,. . .

America’s First Daughter {Excerpt & 10 Things You Didn’t Know about America’s First Daughter}

America's First Daughter giveaway

America’s First Daughter Excerpt: And what of our future . . . ?” I asked. Mr. Short smiled. “If you could give up all thoughts of the convent, our future depends upon the orders your father is awaiting from America. Your father has asked that in his absence, I be appointed in his place as chargé d’affaires with commensurate salary. If I receive such an appointment, then I can present myself to your father as a worthy suitor. Otherwise, I’m afraid he’ll consider me a wandering wastrel without employment.” “He would never!” Mr. Short chuckled mirthlessly. “You think not? I have in my possession a letter from your father lecturing me on the need to build my fortune. The most memorable line reads: This is not a world in which heaven rains down riches into any open hand.” How churlish of Papa, but had I not, from the youngest age, also. . .

Royal Easter Story (The Princess Parables) by Jeanna Young & Jacqueline Johnson {Review}

A Royal Easter Story picture book

From the popular Princess Parables series, an Easter story perfect for girls 4-8.   My 4-year-old Princess loves the Princess Parables series. She doesn’t have a favorite, but she loves to read the books featuring each sister again and again. We love the picture books and the I Can Read! early readers also. Thus, this year, we are very thrilled to add another book to this series with A Royal Easter Story that tells a tale of tradition, of those lost that can be found on Easter and of how Jesus is available for all who Ask, Seek, and Knock. Featuring teaching of Luke 11:9-13 this is a perfect princess themed story to get even the Princess child involved. Gotta love that glittery cover!   The most recent in the Princess Parables is in out Easter Book List! Check the blog for a review. #princess #easter #book A photo posted by. . .

GrubMarket: Farm Fresh to Door Delight! {Online Grocery Review}

GrubMarket #flyby review from @CherryBlossomMJ

I’m a stay-at-home homeschooling mama of three littles and I have a confession to make. I detest going to the grocery store. Going to the store fills me with anxiety. Whether it’s the price checking, the squealing offspring, the germs that I know are getting eaten off random surfaces, or many other things… it is not something I enjoy. Now wouldn’t it be a wonderful solution if I could do that shopping online and get about a 40-50% savings on fresh food?!

Oh!!! You can!

Keep on reading for a neat opportunity dear reader… coupons, giveaways… mmm…

Chris Tomlin Adore: Christmas Songs of Worship CD {Review}

The last couple of weeks I have been preparing myself for Christmas with my new favorite holiday CD and that is Chris Tomlin Adore, it’s a Christmas Songs of Worship CD. My review is posting much later that I had anticipated as life got in the way, but I absolutely couldn’t let this season go by without telling you how much I really have been and am still enjoying this CD. It’s funny, a day or two after I started listening, I noticed a song on the local Christian radio station was very great to sing along with and I shazam-ed it with my phone to discover that it was actually a song on the Adore CD! I was amused and delighted. I had been considering buying the individually mp3 I enjoyed it so much. Well, now after listening to the CD several times I have discovered that I truly. . .

ESV Journaling Bible {Review}

When I was in high school I was already doing a bit of a journaling thing in my Bibles, however not to the artistic ability that I’ve seen on blogs today with this new theme of journaling Bibles. I would look forever in the book stores just trying to find the widest margins. When I heard about the opportunity to be able to see one of these now is so exciting! When I opened the box though, my enthusiasm quickly dimmed. The book itself is good quality and many people will be thrilled with it. The margins definitely provide space to write and journal as artsy as you would like. It just wasn’t what I was hoping for. I requested this English Standard Version Journaling Bible on the concept of what it is, but I did not read any of the details about the size. The translation is fine, and. . .

Creative Madness from the author of Splintered Kingdom – James Aitcheson

Creative Madness Guest Post I think you have to be a little bit mad to be a writer. By its nature it’s a solitary occupation. For hours at a time you cut yourself off from everyday life and lose yourself in worlds of your own devising: living amongst, conversing with and directing the affairs of imaginary people. Within those worlds, you have complete authority to do as you will; as the creator, you possess power without limit. In my case, the world I inhabit when I sit down in front of the word processor does at least have some grounding in reality. As a historical novelist, my powers are constrained to some extent by known facts about the past. My current series of novels – of which The Splintered Kingdom is the second instalment – is set during one of the most traumatic periods of British history: the Norman Conquest. . .
