Sneak a peek into the first chapter of Angela Hunt’s Bathsheba!
I was shocked years ago when Sarah Sundin published her first novel and it easily found it’s way to being my favorite read novel ever. So, of course I’m delighted that she has a new series coming out. Continuing in her military Christian Historical Fiction romance genre with women in the service, the Waves of Freedom series starts with book #1 Through Waters Deep. I cannot wait to get my hands on it! It is absolutely on my wish list! It is either in stores now or nearly so as last I checked it said releasing July/August 2015! Resources Excerpt Download PDF
Last year I read the first book in The Southold Chronicles, A Place in His Heart and while the writing was really good – the story left me unimpressed. Overall, it was just too sad and not a great read. I was eager to give this new-to-me author a chance with her next novel, as I mentioned one of my favorite authors (Siri Mitchell) can also write a pretty devastating story. In the end, I just wasn’t impressed. If this is meant to be a Christian Historical Romance, the romance is sorely lacking and just falls short of my typical expectations for such a novel. For this story it seems as if it was incredibly and thoroughly researched but then rushed to be finished without a smooth flow. The historical details do provide interest, but it’s just not enough to make me enthusiastic.
A few years ago you would never find me reading novellas, much lesson eBook novellas. However, time went on to where it was time, space, and financially-worthy for me to get an eReader. Then I discovered a freebie one day in the title of Gentleman of Her Dreams and read it. It was an author that I didn’t know but the cover and description were awesome. I loved every minute of it! You can read my review of that novella and the books in the series that it prequels as well (here). After this I became thirsty for anything written by the author Jen Turano and she remains a favorite author of mine today! Now I think e-novella books are awesome! The freebies are a wonderful idea and have introduced me to a few favorites that I am glad to buy and recommend and buy for family & friends in. . .
I’m sure you’re aware about how much I absolutely love to do interviews with authors of Christian Historical Fiction, after all I do them all the time right? What?! My last interview posted was before June 2014 and I have others that were awesome that I neglected to share with you?! What?! Oh wait, I had a baby. And then influenza A. Hmm.. Excuses, excuses. So much has been missed! I cannot begin to describe how terrible I feel. I own you all an apology and some specific authors, especially. Alas. Well, let’s remedy the situation and get cracking with some new blood! Why not start with an excellent new author to the site! With out further adieu, please welcome, Christine Johnson! What made you interested in writing Christian Historical Fiction? Do you write any other genres? Historical fiction has always been a natural fit, because I love to read. . .
*This is a new post, of a review that was originally posted in a poor format in 2010. This should be more readable for you I hope, thanks to my new format with the Ultimate Book Blogger Plugin.* This is one of the better whole novels that I have read in a while. This is a historical romance that has all of the elements that one’s heart looks for and while at the same time bringing forth events of a war time past that are true and hard to accept. Usually I am not a fan of war time novels, but this one captures my heart. In a similar manner as the films Pearl Harbor and Hanover Street except with a moral conscious. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the sequel A Memory Between Us come this fall. It starts with the cover being pure dreamy that. . .
When I hear of a début author I’m always curious. (ETA: So I know now that Christine is not actually a début author, but this is her first novel with Revell Books. She has many other Love Inspired Historicals that are absolutely going on my wish list!) The cover of this book really appealed to me. I did not realize it was a Florida Keyes novel until I started in. I was reading an eARC and figured I would read a chapter or two to see if it should go on my to-review list. I didn’t expect to be so captivated that I was reading well until 4 AM until I could fend off sleep no-longer. The next afternoon, I read the rest.
*This post is update with my new format. Originally posted in November 2009. Contemporary Romantic Comedy is the genre that author Janice Thompson’s new series Weddings by Bella falls within and boy does she know how to write it well. “Fools Rush In”, book #1 is a heart beating, goosebump raising, giggles under cover read. I was able to read this in less a day, which considering my teething, growth spurt experiencing, 3 month old daughter is quite the feat. *wink* Bella Rossi is a New Jersey Italian relocated with her whole family to the shores of Galveston, Texas and she never envisioned falling for a true to earth eastern Texan cowboy, but that might just be what God has in store. The pages of this novel are grin cracking fun. I was amused by so many segments that I would re-read them aloud to my husband. If you are. . .
*This post is updated with my new format on April 29, 2015. Originally posted in 2013. The Icing on the Cake by Janice Thompson is a read I needed just right when I had it available to read. As I sit here on the couch attempting by pen and paper to write this review which I will later type I wonder if it is a good time or if the anesthesia has fully worn off yet as I just misspelled icing… Life can be so complicated sometimes and a great past time or distraction may often be found on my bookshelf. This weekend (August 29th) it was found and filled by Janice Thompson first as I returned to the world of wedding organization in Galveston, Texas. This time in the second book of the Weddings by Design series also related to two previous trilogies of Weddings by Bella followed by. . .
Small-town girl Katie Fisher is planning her wedding. Sure, her boyfriend hasn’t managed to pop the question just yet, but that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t enter a contest in Texas Bride magazine to win the dress of her dreams, right? But when her boyfriend breaks up with her and takes a job in another town–the very same day Katie wins her dream dress–her world is turned upside down. Should she claim her prize? And will the hunky former pro-basketball player who runs the swanky Dallas bridal shop–yeah, you read that right–catch on to her humiliation if she does?
Janice Thompson designs a romance sure to delight, with plenty of fish-out-of-water moments, a hilarious supporting cast, and more of the wedding biz world her readers adore.
Beth, the author, is a music teacher by-day and I think that lends itself over into her writing as it amusingly poetical at times with a fine rhythm. As a genealogist, I’ve found that the American Revolutionary War is my favorite war-time to research and study.
With spectacular detail that brings the Colonial South alive, Beth White invites readers into a world of intrigue and espionage from a little-known side of the American Revolutionary War. Her richly textured settings and characters delight while fast pacing and closely held secrets will keep readers turning the pages.
A young woman finds her life altered when she receives a letter that sets her on a new path toward a changed life–and perhaps lifelong love.
Fan favorite Julie Lessman draws a romantic triangle that will have readers in a tizzy in this glittering Gilded Age tale of transforming love.
“My favorite scene is a very heated and emotional exchange between Logan and Cait when she tells him she’s decided to court his arch enemy and ex-best friend, the man who destroyed his engagement to Cait the first time around. I’m one of those authors who loves LOTS of drama and angst, and trust me—this scene has in spades. :)”
A SURPRISED BY LOVE_HIGH-RES COVERI just had to have the privilege of sharing this scene with you! However as Julie says, it is a bit long, so I’ve posted it in a separate post for those that wish to throw themselves into the emotion and read it now. 🙂 You can find that post HERE.
It’s pretty long—six pages…
I love my PEN posts, and this is perhaps the one that I’ve been most excited about all year. I have a handful of favorite authors, not just for their writing, but for my personal relationship with them as well and dear Julie is one of them. I feel blessed to have her here on my blog and in my life and I’m delighted to share her thoughts with you today!
